1. Describe your favorite character and how she/he evolved throughout the story. Mention important details from the film that helped you make inferences about his/her personality.

Scout was a very smart little girl who said what she thought before realizing the consequences. She was very adventurous and she liked doing what her brother did.

An important detail is when she got into a fight with the other boy in school, because she said to everyone that the boy was poor, and he felt offended. Also when she reminded Mr. Cunningham that he was and individual and not part of a mob.

2. Describe your favorite moment of the story.  Mention how that moment affected the characters or the plot.

My favorite moment of the story is when the mob is outside the jail waiting for Atticus to move so they can kill Tom and Scout talks to Mr. Ewell and makes him realize that he is and individual and not part of a mob. Scout helps his dad because the mob went away and Tom was safe again.

3. Atticus is considered “the moral backbone of Maycomb (town)”, the person  to whom others turn in times of doubt and trouble. What qualities could you observe that would explain this?

He was fair and noble. He would always fight for the truth and justice. In his case of defending Tom he proves to everyone that he wasn’t racist and that everyone is equal for him, despite the fact that Tom was black.

4. The title of To Kill a Mockingbird has very little literal connection to the plot, but it carries a great deal of symbolic weight in the story. In this story of innocents destroyed by evil, the “mockingbird” comes to represent the idea of innocence. Thus, to kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. (Taken from Sparknotes)

The title “To kill a Mockingbird” shows how black people, despite being innocent were discriminated and accused of crimes that they were not guilty off

5. Which characters are innocent?  How does the story and the film portray them as so? Do they remain this way?

Atticus Finch, Scout, Jem and Tom. In the story Atticus is described as a very honest and honorable person. Also Scout is described as naïve and innocent. Everybody knows that Tom Robinson is not guilty of the crime he is accused of.  And Jem, even though he seems  a mischievous kid, he is very smart and honorable. Yes, they remain this way throughout the story, Jem changes sometimes because he likes to play but otherwise he remains the same throughout the story.

6. Describe an incident in your life were you came face to face with cruelty.  How did it affect you?  What did you learn about people through this experience?

There´s a new law in the United States called the “Law of Arizona”. This discriminates terribly people who look immigrant. Even though you might be a legal citizen, the Federal Department has the right to ask you for your legal documents. If they are not legal, they are departed and sent back to their country  on a plane putting as much people as they can.

6.  Modern day America is currently  being confronted with “hate crimes”.  Acts of violence spurred by racial or religious hatred.  Find out what hate crimes are and what Americans are doing about it.  Write a brief description.  Include your source.

It happens when a criminal spots a victim because he or she is part of a certain social group, it can be a racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, class, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political perspective.

There are laws protecting hate crimes in the United States.

8.  As Guatemalans, do we experience this type of crime?  Is it affecting our society in any way?  What should be done about this?  Express your opinion

Yes we experienced these types of crime in Guatemala. Maybe not as in the United States with black and white people, but still with the Mayans.  Also with people without money or with important influences. Yes it affects our society because, our society doesn’t give enough opportunities to the discriminated people, and that people could be the ones that make our country progress. We should stop discrimination of all types because it is one of the things that affect a lot our country. I don’t like discrimination at all because I believe that all men are created equal.
